Q&A With Dr. Deca...DON’T HAVE TO BE A DOCTOR TO KNOW YOUR NERVES

Q: During a recent triceps injection - and a quad injection a couple of weeks ago - I hit a nerve, I think. At least I assumed that because it felt like a wasp stinging me. In the quad injection, it felt like the stinger went down to the bone! I was okay with the quad one within a day or two, but my triceps is actually still numb in one of the heads of my triceps horseshoe. Is this serious?

A: Sticking various body parts is something that came into fashion back in the late 80’s, went out of fashion and came back quickly. It’s something most bodybuilders do routinely. But the fact is, you’re all luckier than you think because mistakes in injecting can end up in some disastrous results. Everything from abscesses that cause permanent tissue damage and deep infection that can be life-threatening, to nerve damage that can debilitate the injector permanently. I don’t mean to scare you, but injecting in particular sites, haphazardly, is really dangerous. I also see the benefit and I’m not suggesting that you necessarily shouldn’t ever inject in a site other than glutes, because we all know that glutes can get abscessed too. My point is that you should study the areas of the legs and arms that are most heavily laden with nerve sites and bundles. You’re not a doctor, of course, and I’m not suggesting to take med school classes, but you can find diagrams that show you how nerves bundle in and out of joints and run down the limbs. Also, many people get greedy and load the site up with too much oil and AAS product. This isn’t good for anyone. This is how you overload and hit nerves even if your injection didn’t. I suggest you choose one drug that you couldn’t fit into your multi-AAS glute injection, load it into a syringe with a smaller gauge needle and then inject a 1/2 cc or something. Otherwise, you risk overloading the area and it may just sit and get infected in a pocket that develops scar tissue and has to be surgically opened. Then you have a nasty scar and it defeats the purpose of aesthetic enhancement. Rotate often and know your body. Don’t inject areas you cannot see, other than glutes. Most times hitting nerves is not serious, but it can be. Think hard about doing it.
